For those that don’t know me, I’ve been drawing since before I could walk. As soon as I could hold a pencil in my hand I was drawing. My dad was a lawyer and he’d bring home reams of paper from the office and I’d fill them up with Dr. Seus inspired drawings of crazy animals, weird houses, staircases that go nowhere, party animals on buses, dancing mice and whatever else my imagination was working out on that particular day.
While traveling I meant to sketch but never really gave myself the time (I was too busy walking and eating and drinking!) I even brought my good pens and a sketchbook but other than a few quick drawings I had nothing. Now I’m teaching art to kids, and it’s completely renewed my absolute and total love of drawing.
I tell the kids that I teach to practice, practice, practice drawing every day. Then I realized that I should REALLY practice what I preach, so I’ve decided to draw every single day too, starting NOW! My favorite thing to draw still (funnily enough) is animals. While traveling in Greece and Turkey I became (ahem) a little obsessed with photographing the homeless cats and dogs. I also lamented the fact that no one spayed or neutered their pets which was why there were so many homeless animals.
My plan is to take my inspiration from my travels and post a “Drawing Around the World” every week or two. We’ll see how good I am at sticking to my word about PRACTICING!
