Mussel Beach, not to be confused with “Muscle Beach.”

This was our one sunny day while camping in Ucluelet this August. This is the way of the West Coast. The likelihood of clouds and rain is very good, so when you have sun… you savor every drop of it.

We stayed at a campsite called Mussel Beach. I’m a total wilderness camper, and to pay $30 a night was very unusual for me, but free camping isn’t as plentiful around here as it is in my neck of the woods. Especially if you want waterfront, which we did! Our campsite (where the tent was) was just up our own little private beach trail, but we had the best bonfire view I think I’ve ever had. We sat and read our books, did a little beach combing and watched a sea lion frolic and play in the water for over an hour.
The islands in the distance are called the Broken Islands Group, part of Pacific Rim National Park.
I had my eye open for the grey whales that I’d heard had been seen in the bay, but alas, I didn’t see any. What we did see though were a couple of black bears down the beach foraging for whatever the fresh sheet was offering that day. I felt OK about them being around because they were so far away, but the next morning we woke up to a huge pile of bear scat right beside our campfire pit. Hmmm, a little too close for comfort!
The water carves out some interesting formations in the rocks.
To get to the campsite you have to drive about 20 minutes on a gravel road and it’s a “bring your own water” and “pack out your own garbage” kind of place. Essentially it’s a lot like the wilderness camping I’m used to, but there are outhouses. Frankly, I’d usually rather use the woods than the port-a-potty, but these ones didn’t smell too badly.

Serenity. Now.
This was the view from our campfire. Not bad, eh?
The prefect spot for deep thoughts…
A little “last-ditch” tide pool scavenging before the sun went down.

Thanks! It was a gorgeous spot, not to be missed! Tofino’s not the only place to go on the West Coast!
